Just Thinking 13

Just Thinking 13

Today’s meditation is a caution to learn to discern the will of God on everyday matters of life. What we see with our naked eyes may not always be what it seems.

An example is what happened to the Israelites in Joshua 9. Verses 14-16 says,

14 So the Israelites examined their food, but they did not consult the Lord. 15 Then Joshua made a peace treaty with them and guaranteed their safety, and the leaders of the community ratified their agreement with a binding oath. 16 Three days after making the treaty, they learned that these people actually lived nearby!

Joshua 9:14-16 NLT

The passage tells us that Israel was deceived by the Gibeonites, who were marked for destruction, to enter into a treaty or covenant with them.

Verse 14 says that Israel did this without first consulting God. As a result, they became bound to the treaty and powerless to change it since they had sealed it with an oath in the name of the Lord.

God never breaks a covenant

In spite of the deception, God honoured the treaty because His name was tied to it. God is never a covenant breaker!

However, every covenant we made or made on our behalf without God’s name on it can be broken by invoking the covenant that Jesus Christ made with us through the Cross!

Colossians 2:14 says,

14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

God promises us in Isaiah 43:18-19,

18 “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old.
19 Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

Just thinking final thoughts…

Finally, be vigilant, be discerning, and not allow yourself to be outwitted, deceived or placed in bondage. Seek God first in prayer!
