Just Thinking 16

There are several uses of images and figures of speech in the Bible which helps us understand and appreciate deep spiritual truths and the nature of God.

If we take time to think about them, they will help to boost our faith and confidence in God.

An example is Psalm 61:1-4 (NKJV) which says,

1 Hear my cry, O God; Attend to my prayer. 2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. 3 For You have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. 4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings.

In verse 3, we see such words or phrases like:

You have been a “shelter” for me; a “strong tower” from the enemy.

Verse 4 says:

I will abide in your Tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of your wings.

Psalm 57:1 says, In the shadow of your wings, I will take refuge.

God is Spirit and has no physical appearance. He is not a physical rock, a structure or a flying bird with wings but we can relate to these physical things and what they are able to do.

We can then imagine God with wings of protection, an immovable rock, a tower of refuge, and a fortress of security that no one can break through.

We can see Him as someone to run to and be guaranteed safety, His love, assurance and care.

Then we can read that passage again and similar ones like that, meditate on them, and enjoy peace, security and strength which only the Almighty God can provide!

(Other passages to read are Psalms 144:1-2; Proverbs 18:10; Joel 3:16, etc)
