Just Thinking 17

Just Thinking 17

There were 3 Hebrew women who resisted the order of a king in order to preserve a nation. They were Shiphrah, Puah and Jochebed. The first 2 were midwives while the 3rd was the mother of Moses. You can find their story in Exodus 1 and 2.

There were two things about them:

1. They feared God;

2. They had faith in God.

Hebrews 11:23-25, 27 (ESV) says,

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.

27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.

What those women did were examples of faith. They made fearless choices by defying the king and obeying God.

Moses grew up to pick up those examples of faith even though he was an adopted prince of Egypt.

Today, there are and there will be many instances where Christian believers are compelled to or placed in a difficult situation of choosing between following the clear commands of God and abiding by or resisting godless Government policies/decrees.

It is far better to fear God

Civil disobedience is sometimes allowed if there is any prospect of compromise, which may not always be the case. The likely consequence of civil disobedience is often persecution. We can be encouraged by the examples of those women in Exodus, including Moses, Joseph, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, and many others who refused to compromise on their faith and their convictions.

It is far better to fear God, to keep His commandments and to have faith in Him than to compromise with the world.

Psalm 34:7-10 (NKJV) says,

The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.
