Just Thinking 25

When I went to visit my daughter at one of the hospital wards in Manchester and saw different people with various sicknesses or diseases lying down or sitting up in beds, I was reminded of the impact of the Fall in the Garden of Eden.

The dictionary defines disease as a disorder of structure and function, especially in a human, animal or plant, and producing certain symptoms, etc.

Genesis 1:1-2, 31 (ESV) says,

1In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

Before God created the heavens and the earth, everything was empty and without shape or structure (verse 2). After the creation, everything was perfect and very good (verse 31).

In Genesis 2 and 3, we read of the account of man’s disobedience to God and sin. Leading to God pronouncing a curse on the ground, and pain to man and woman. The consequences were a disorder of structure and function in all of creation. This defines what we know today as disease.

Thank God for Jesus who took that curse upon himself. Receiving beatings on our behalf for our healing, and death on the Cross for our redemption!

Isaiah prophesied about Jesus Christ when he said in Isaiah 53:4-6 (ESV),

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
